Screen on the Green

Posted by Ren McCormack on July 17, 2006

It’s that time of year again.  For the next five Monday nights there will be classic movies shown on the Mall near the Capitol.  Screen on the Green is a great summer DC event.  Get there early, set up a blanket, bring dinner & wine, and chill out while watching a flick with friends.  The movie starts at sundown, around 9pm.  For a good viewing spot, get there early.  If yinz want to meet up, let me know.

This week’s movie:  The Day the Earth Stood Still.

A UFO lands in Washington and a regal alien emerges. He warns the peoples of Earth to stop nuclear testing and to live in peace, or else! A landmark of Hollywood sci-fi, it can be seen as an atomic age parable. Patricia Neal and Michael Rennie are the stars, along with the seven-foot doorman from Grauman’s Chinese Theater who plays the forbidding robot Gort. Music is by Bernard Herrmann and direction by Robert Wise. Don’t forget these handy words… ”Klaatu Barada Nikto.” (Fox) — Jim Byerley
