Blocktoberfest Blackballed By Bastards

Posted by Ren McCormack on September 28, 2006

From our friends at Hi-ball Events:

BLOCKtoberfest Has Been Postponed until Fall of 2007

Due to unprecedented attendance at last year’s Blocktoberfest, Arlington County recently informed us that they will no longer allow such events on their streets.  The Blocktoberfest management team has worked tirelessly to find a new site suitable for this event.  We finally have a perfect new venue for the event, but alas, we were unable to finalize the details in time to hold the massive Blocktoberfest this fall (2006).

So, get ready for the event that is TWO YEARS in the making.  Next year, Blocktoberfest `07 will not only be the largest Fall festival in the DC Area, but will be the NATION’S largest Octoberfest celebration.  Details about Blocktoberfest 2007 will be coming soon.  In the meantime, get ready for the:

On another note…

Burnt Sienna is playing tonight (9.28) at the Clarendon Ballroom.  Mr. Greengenes is playing next Thursday (10.5).  Arrive before 9pm to beat the cover.  With the fall chill setting in, these could be some of the last weeks enjoy happy hour on the roof-top bar.   Who’s in?  I’ll be there.

All the News That’s Fit to Print

Posted by Ren McCormack on September 25, 2006

Here are two kickball articles that describe what kickball is all about pretty well.

The first article is from the NY Times.  It does a pretty good job describing the two kickball tribes:  the A-holes (the ones who take the game seriously) and the Partiers (the ones who take their drinking seriously).

Quote of the article:  “No one here is sober. I just played flip cup and had a couple shots.”

The other article is an older one that I found in the “dating” section of the Post.  Yea, don’t ask what I was doing there.

Quotes of the article:  “It boggles the mind that a game as unsexy as kickball could be the hottest aphrodisiac in town.”  “Everybody is pretty much a lush.”  “The kickball is just an excuse to get to the bar….”  Yup, that pretty much sums it up.

One Shot, Two Shots, Three Shots, Four

Posted by Ren McCormack on September 20, 2006

So our own little Alisa is all growns up.  Well, almost–she turns 25 this weekend.  Come out to help her celebrate Thursday night (9/21) at Cafe Saint-Ex (at 14th and T Streets NW, near the U St./Cordoza Metro stop (Green line)).  The birthday shots will start rolling at 7pm, but come whenever you can make it.  Alisa predicts that we’ll start upstairs before heading downstairs for the real fun.

Per Alisa’s words, “Let’s make it a sinful night!”  (No, I didn’t make that one up either.)  So let’s help our little sinner solidify her spot in Hell with a night to forget.

My Girl Wants to Party All the Time

Posted by Ren McCormack on September 14, 2006

I’ve been MIA from the blog for a while, but I’m back with a vengeance!

There are some upcoming social events to place on your callendars:

Thursday (tonight):

The Recess Warriors placed both 1st and 2nd in the mid-season scavenger hunt back in June.  The 1st place prize was a keg party at Tom Tom in Adams Morgan (2333 18th St NW).  They were gracious enough to invite us along to help kick the keg (that, or because Jed has dated one of their captains for 3 years….thanks Jed, I knew that dating Margaux would pay off at some point!).  After everyone is nice and sauced, they plan to head to Heaven & Hell for 80s dance night.  Some of you may remember that place from that faithful night earlier in the summer…

The keg will be tapped at happy hour, whatever time that means.

Saturday 9/16:

The K-funk All Stars have invited us to join them for one final Nats game of the summer.  Sure, the Nats suck more than Pete’s mom, but that’s not the point.  The game starts at 7pm and they are getting there at 3pm to start tailgaiting with their KEG.  They also will have a grill, and it’s BYO food.  Afterwards, we’ll probably roll out somewhere–perhaps the Bungalow, Pour House, or the likely candidate, Grab’s basement.

There will be beer pong & flip cup & ridiculousness.  You should come.

If there is one thing that Alisa likes, it’s good intel.  Although, I bet that she likes other things better, but that’s another story.  Well, Alisa has some good intel that this year’s Blocktoberfest is not happening.  I’m not sure why, and I can’t imagine why Arlington County doesn’t want 20k drunkards running amuck.  Is that how you spell amuck?  Does it matter?Anyway, the HighBall Events  page does not list Blocktoberfest in its upcoming events, so it looks like a lock that it is not occuring.  BOOOO!

One of my favorite DC events is the Oktoberfest beer tasting in Shirlington.  The Cap City Brew Co.  brings in micro brews from all over the east coast (and even internationally, as Chimmey was here from Belgium a few years back).  Basically, you buy a cup and drink tix and try different beers, eat some Weiners, hear a little polka, and dance with Gerta.  It’s a great day.  Here’s an insider’s tip:  towards the end of the day the vendors want to unload their goods (beer) so they don’t have to take it home, so they stop taking tix!  Free beer!  It’s not all vendors, but you’ll figure out which ones.

Unfortunately, I probably can’t make it bc I may be camping at Bryce Canyon in UT that weekend.

Bridge Day/Rafting:

Mark you callendars for the weekend of Oct. 22.  That saturday (22nd) is Bridge Day in WV.  Then we’ll raft the Upper Gaulley on the 23rd.  You’ll need to take that Monday off work, and I suggest taking Friday off (not necessary) to make a mini vaca out of it.  The fall folliage should be nice that time of year as an added bonus.

This is just tentative right now…I definitely will organize a rafting trip this fall and I’ll let you know for certain the date.

Ok, enough for now…get back to work!
